Mnémosyne

An open-source Discord bot that brings PRONOTE into your direct messages.

Mnémosyne sends the day’s timetable as an image every morning, notifies you as soon as a grade, homework or room change shows up on PRONOTE, prepares tomorrow’s bag and works out when to leave so you don’t miss your bus.

The idea

PRONOTE is the school-life tool used by most French middle and high schools. There is an app, but people stop opening it and find out about a grade or a cancelled class too late. Mnémosyne fetches the information for you and sends it where you already are: your Discord direct messages.

What it does

  • The morning brief. At the time you choose, the day’s timetable as an image: rooms, absent teachers, cancelled classes, tests and homework due. In the evening, tomorrow’s.
  • Alerts. A new grade, homework, a room change, a cancelled class, a message: one alert at the right time. At night, they wait until you wake up.
  • Tomorrow’s bag. Your supplies per subject, ticked off with buttons.
  • When to leave. Bus, tram, metro, coach or train: Mnémosyne works out when to leave based on your first class and the network’s official timetables (GTFS), then watches your trip in real time and suggests an alternative if the bus is cancelled or late.
  • A web panel. PRONOTE login, transport network, alerts, times, bag, themes and colours: everything is set online. The /settings command takes you there from Discord.

The bot installs on your own Discord account (User Install): it needs no server, everything arrives in your conversation with it.

Your data stays with you

Mnémosyne runs on your own install, on your computer or a small server. Your PRONOTE password is never stored: only a reconnection token is kept, in the bot’s data folder. The bot only talks to PRONOTE and Discord. On its first run it records the current state without sending anything, so you don’t get a flood of notifications.

How it’s built

The bot is written in TypeScript with discord.js. The PRONOTE connection goes through pawnote, an open-source library that talks to PRONOTE; if PRONOTE changes its protocol, an update of the library is needed. Brief and alert images are drawn on the server, in the project’s colours. The web panel is served by the bot itself and setup takes one command: you start the bot, it prints a personal link to the panel, and the rest is step by step. Mnémosyne can also be deployed with Docker or on a Pterodactyl host.

The project is open source under the MIT licence. It is not affiliated with Index Éducation, the publisher of PRONOTE.
